Purge-atory

Designate a box to be your “purge-atory” (i.e., purge purgatory).

As you’re decluttering (or simply going about your day), if you find items that you’re pretty sure you want to get rid of, but aren’t quite ready to send out the door, put them in purge-atory.

Every few months, check in on your purge-atory. For items that you haven’t thought about since you put them in the box, donate or discard them. But if, in the mean time, you do think of them and want to retrieve them from purge-atory, you’re able to do so.

Note: Purge-atory is controversial topic in organization circles, with some people swearing by it, and others saying that it’s a horrible idea that encourages you to keep clutter. In our opinion, to each their own: if it works for you, great, and if it’s not for you, that’s fine too.

After trying this tool, reflect on the experience in your Project Quartz journal—is purge-atory for you? Why or why not?
