#30Wears

When deciding whether or not to purchase a piece of clothing, ask yourself if you’ll wear it 30 times.

  • If it’s an easy “yes”: yahoo, you’ve found your closet’s newest member!

  • If it’s a definite “no”: put it back. You don’t need it clogging your closet.

  • If it’s an “idk, maybe”: put it back. You want your closet to be full of “hell yeah!” pieces. Something better will come along.

Answer in hand, make your purchase or put it back on the rack!

Note: This is just a guideline, not a hard and fast rule. Sometimes, one-time pieces (e.g., a wedding dress) are worth it. But for everyday fashion, you want things you’ll wear repeatedly.

Variation: Hell Yeah or No

Derek Sivers proposes applying the “hell yeah” rule to more than just clothing. According to Sivers, if the answer to any question isn’t a “hell yeah,” it’s a “no.”
