Collective Effervescence
Collective effervescence is a phrase coined by sociologist Émile Durkheim to describe the moments of self-transcendence that occur when a group of people comes together to experience the same heightened emotions at the same time. For example, going to a concert, running a 5K, dancing in a crowded room, or participating in a polar plunge.
In your Project Quartz journal, reflect on the experiences you’ve had with collective effervescence.
Is there a particular type of event that really gets you “fizzing”?
If so, make a plan to experience this type of event more frequently (e.g., sign up for one now, or join a group of like-minded individuals who will encourage you to do it more often).
