A Problem for Future You

When grappling with a difficult problem or decision, ask yourself whether it can be best resolved by current you or future you. Things to consider: your current mental state, resources available to current and future you, and the urgency of the problem or decision.

If the answer is future you, pass the baton and free yourself from the issue for the time being by saying “that’s a problem for future [insert your name].” Then focus on what current you is most capable of doing.

While this tool might initially sound like a ticket to procrastinate, it’s actually anything but. While procrastination involves passing something off to a future version of you that is less capable than current you (because future you will have less time and other conflicting responsibilities), A Problem for Future You acknowledges that sometimes future you will actually be more capable of solving a problem than current you.
