Five Fewer Hangers

Take everything out of your closet and off its hangers.

Remove five hangers.

Put everything back on hangers one by one in order of priority (i.e., what you like or wear the most).

Considering that the remaining five items are your least favorite items, they’re prime candidates for donating or selling.

Note: If you end up with more than 5 items that you’re willing to let go of, great! And if you can only part with 3, that’s totally fine too. Five Hangers is a tool, not a rule.

Variation: Five Fewer Anything

This tool can also be used for other things (e.g., non-hanging clothing, jewelry, books, toys, etc.). Simply take them all out and put them back in order of priority until you’re left with what you’re willing to part with.

Variation: Started from the Bottom

If you don’t have time to evaluate every item in a category right now, you can always do a quick scan of your items, and eliminate from the bottom. In other words, which items do you already know aren’t going to make the cut?
